Courses for Certification

The Center offers many university courses that may be used to meet various certification requirements. If you want to know whether or not a certain course may be used to meet the certification requirements of a particular state, you should check with the appropriate certifying agency.

Multicampus Courses

Courses that list initials from more than one University of Missouri campus are called multicampus courses. If departments of two or more University of Missouri campuses cooperate in developing a course, it is called a multicampus course. When you are completing the application form to enroll in a multicampus course, be sure to use the title and number of the campus that you wish to have recorded on your transcript.

Problems Courses

If you arrange for a University of Missouri professor to design and supervise a Problems course for you, the Center for Distance and Independent Study can process your registration and report your grade to the appropriate University of Missouri campus. Contact the Center to request a Problems approval form. After you complete this form, return it to us along with your enrollment application.

Enrollment in a Center for Distance and Independent Study course does not constitute admission to the University of Missouri. Although the actual length of time you require to complete a distance learning course depends on the course and the number of hours you can devote to study, the average completion time for a three-hour university course is six months.

University courses offered through the Center for Distance and Independent Study have been developed by faculty members at one of the campuses of the University of Missouri. Every course has been approved by the appropriate academic department chairperson and is equivalent to the course taught on campus. Each course listing contains the number, title and initials of the campus offering the course.

The Center for Distance and Independent Study does not award university degrees, and it is not authorized to advise on a course. You may enroll in a Center for Distance and Independent Study course at any time. If you intend to use a course for credit toward a degree at the University of Missouri, you must obtain approval from your advisor before enrolling in an independent study course. University of Missouri students enrolled in the College of Arts and Science, the College of Business, and the College of Education must include the signature of an appropriate official at the College on their application form.

Independent Study from other Universities

The Center is a member of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA), which publishes The Independent Study Catalog. This publication, widely known as Peterson's Guide, lists courses offered by accredited colleges and universities that are members of UCEA. High School Students — University Courses

Students who have completed the eleventh grade and are in the top fourth of their class may enroll in entry-level university courses. Your high school principal should indicate approval by signing your application. Check the course description to be certain that the course will meet your educational needs. All prerequisites must be fulfilled before you enroll. University fees and regulations apply to university courses taken by high school students.
